Black soap, or beldi, is one of the oldest treasures of Moroccan beauty. Used for centuries in hammams, this traditional care has won admirers far beyond the Maghreb for its natural exfoliating and purifying properties.

What is Moroccan black soap?

Despite what the name suggests, black soap is not a conventional bar of soap. It is a smooth, dark brown paste made from crushed black olives macerated in salt and potash, then blended with olive oil. The result: a 100% natural product, rich in vitamin E, with no preservatives or synthetic fragrance.

  2. Apply the black soap: spread a thin layer over damp skin, avoiding the face if your skin is reactive. Leave on for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse, then scrub: using a kessa glove, work in firm circular motions. You will see the dead cells lift away.
  4. Moisturise: finish with a few drops of argan oil to nourish the skin deeply.

How to recognise an authentic black soap

A true Moroccan black soap contains very few ingredients: olives, olive oil, potash, water, sometimes eucalyptus. Be wary of long ingredient lists featuring sulphates or synthetic fragrances.
