The Moroccan Hammam Ritual: Every Step to Recreate It at Home

Far more than a simple steam bath, the hammam is an institution in Morocco: a place of purification, relaxation and social connection, visited weekly by generations of women and men. Here is the complete traditional ritual — and how to recreate it at home.

The hammam, a thousand-year tradition

Heir to the Roman baths and enriched by Islamic culture, the hammam tradition is woven into Moroccan life. People go to purify themselves before big occasions, to take care of themselves, but also to spend time with those close to them. The humid heat, the gestures passed from mother to daughter, the scent of eucalyptus: everything invites you to let go.

The steps of the traditional ritual

  1. The heat: settle into the hot room for 10 to 15 minutes. The steam opens the pores and prepares the skin.
  2. The black soap: apply a thin layer of argan and rose black soap all over the body and leave on for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. The kessa scrub: this is the heart of the ritual. With firm circular motions, the kessa glove lifts away dead cells and boosts circulation. For a gentler version, the foaming blue nila scrub is ideal for sensitive skin.
  4. Rhassoul (optional): this volcanic clay from the Atlas mountains, mixed with rose water, is applied as a mask on body and hair to purify gently.
  5. Rinsing and soothing: rinse thoroughly, then mist with rose floral water to tone and calm the skin.
  6. Nourishing: finish with the argan and rose serum, applied to slightly damp skin to seal in moisture.

Recreating the hammam at home

You don't need a zellige dome to enjoy the ritual: a bathroom made steamy by a good hot shower is enough to open the pores. Set aside 30 to 45 minutes of quiet, your black soap, a kessa glove, your rose water and your argan serum. Once a week is the ideal rhythm.
